Van Halen on one of their most successful tours, this was the height of it all. The band led off with Eddie Van Halen playing electric drill on his guitar as the intro to Poundcake. It was an obvious "one-up" to Jimmy Page's violin bow. Alice In Chains were very impressive as an opening act who spawned a heavy, new bombastic brand of hard rock music and inspired a new generation of bands themselves. Sadly, singer Layne Staley passed away of drug overdose later, April 20, 2002.

Great Halloween show. One of the reasons I remember this was that we had been putting in long hours for a few months at work and really needed a good show to wind down. We missed Eric Johnson completely and sat in the Market Square Gardens to watch the concert. SETLIST: Intro, Force Ten, Limelight, Freewill, Distant Early Warning, Time Stand Still, Dreamline, Bravado, Roll the Bones, Show Don't Tell, The Big Money, Subdivisions. The Pass, Where's My Thing?, The Rhythm Method (Drum Solo), Closer to the Heart, Xanadu, Superconductor, Tom Sawyer, Encore Medley: The Spirit of Radio, 2112 (Overture), Finding My Way, La Villa Strangiato, Anthem, Red Barchetta, The Spirit of Radio (reprise)

As for Over The Rhine, I remember them quite well and was impressed greatly by their style, which has now been replicated by any number of female rock and alternative artists.

KISS
w/sg Great White, Trixter
November 28, 1992
Market Square Arena
Indianapolis, IN
|
 |
 |
096.
The last full blown Kiss tour without make-up. We arrived late and missed Trixter (perhaps on purpose). We sat in the Market Square Gardens area to watch the show. Local strippers were hired as stage props for Take It Off. SETLIST: Creatures Of The Night / Deuce / I Just Wanna / Unholy / Parasite / Heaven's On Fire / Domino / Watchin' You / Hotter Than Hell / Firehouse / I Want You / Drum Solo / Forever / War Machine / Rock And Roll All Nite / Lick It Up / Take It Off / Cold Gin / I Love It Loud / Detroit Rock City / Shout It Out Loud / God Gave Rock And Roll To You II / Love Gun / Star Spangled Banner
Great White was a decent support act, at least better than the average support act for a 80's-90's Kiss concert. Once the band got rolling on their handful of hits, the concert was pretty good overall. We missed Trixter altogether, on purpose or otherwise.

JOE WALSH & GLENN FREY

Ticket Price: $9.75

097.
Eagles alumni Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey teamed up for an interesting bill the summer of 93. This actually happened prior to the first Eagles reunion. At the time, Don Henley was fronting a popular solo career and verbally berating former bandmate Walsh in the press. It appeared as though a reunion was not possible in 1993. So, with two of five Eagles touring together, we thought it might prove to be an interesting concert. Although Walsh and Frey shared the stage together, they unfortunately traded off songs from each solo career (Walsh's set spanned James Gang classics to Ordinary Average Guy while Frey offered a lot of power pop from his movie soundtrack work including The Heat Is On and Smuggler's Blues). Neither set meshed all that well.

The thing about late summer outdoor concerts is that the very real possibility exists for cold weather. Such was the case for Steely Dan. It was a clear evening, no rain, but the temperatures turned cold quickly as the sun set. Great concert, featuring a full array of Steely Dan classics, along with some solo work from Donald Fagan's Kamikirad album and Walter Becker's abominable solo release, 11 Tracks of Whack.

The concert was exceptional. Unfortunately our seats were the worst I have ever had, located behind a support column with a blocked view of the stage. We spent the better part of the concert wandering around so as to actually see something. Pick up a copy of the Pulse CD to hear the whole show. The booklet contains many pictures from this tour as well. The two head sculptures from the album cover of The Division Bell are now located at The Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame Museum in Cleveland.

105. This is the one and only time I ever saw the Stones in concert. I probably couldn't have picked a better tour. Everyone was healthy, they were supporting a decent new record, Voodoo Lounge and the set list was outstanding. I went in just wanting to hear Keith Richards do Happy and was not disappointed. The stage was larger than most modern airports and dwarfed the band members.
Counting Crows have never been remotely among my favorites. We intentionally missed a fair portion of their set, but were there in time to hear them punish a great song by The Psychedelic Furs.

106.
From enormous scale to minuscule, having last attended the Rolling Stones at a dome venue to now attending David Lee Roth at a small club. Having previously performed to millions at US Festival with Van Halen in 1983 to barely selling enough tickets to continue the show at the Vogue only eleven years later. This concert was a "low-dough" event from the start. Originally slated for the Deer Creek Pavillion, the show was moved to The Vogue due to extremely poor ticket sales. Since the concert was scheduled for a Sunday, the start time had to be moved up to 4:00 to accommodate the previously scheduled alternative dance night. In other words, this was not just a low point in Roth's career, he was being bumped to an earlier showtime because the club made more money from their weekly gay dance nights on Sundays. Nevertheless, do not be steered into thinking this was a bad show. Quite the contrary, it was excellent and a damned shame so few came to see it! The intimate setting was perfect for Roth, whose tour was his first since being arrested for trying to buy drugs from an undercover officer in New York City. His latest album, Your Filthy Little Mouth, can be found in most any bargain bin across the country and is easily one of his best and most diverse solo albums to date. The album featured Terry Kilgore on guitar and John Regan on bass. Although there were no flashy names like Vai or Becker on th eroster, this touring band was on par with any of Roth's best solo bands.

107. The (almost) Led Zeppelin reunion of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, sans John Paul Jones who was reportedly never asked to join the fun. All of the middle eastern flavor heard on the No Quarter album was incorporated into the live US Tour, with a full orchestra of Indian musicians to add a certain vindaloo spice to the entire Led Zeppelin set list. Fabulous concert, ending with none other than Kashmir.
Our Lady Peace seemed to be a poor fit as a support act for the former Zeppelin icons, yet they gave their best effort.

This was my first Broadway show and what an exciting way to be introduced to a Broadway Musical than through The WHO's Tommy! The show was held at the St James Theater (actually off-Broadway). The stage sets were much more creative than the cinematic release of Tommy and the music was bombastically loud. The main character, Tommy, was portrayed by Steve Isaacs, who would later become the lead singer of a Dave Navarro project called Panic Channel.

This concert was being rumored as a Peter Criss/Ace Frehley event, fueled largely by the Kiss Worldwide Convention scheduled just a few weeks away. Peter and Ace had been touring off and on as "The Bad Boys of Kiss", however the show turned out to be without the Cat Man. Ace Frehley was prepared to deliver on his own merits however and the club was standing room only. This time out, bassist John Regan was no longer with the band, replaced by Karl Cochran. Richie Scarlet handled second guitar chores.

111. This was the long awaited return of Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band as a touring entity and it was a solid hits-filled concert, providing lots of fan favorites. Touring in support of his newest studio effort, Mystery To Me, Seger wisely downplayed the new material and focused the band on their rich history of FM classics.
Bonepony was an impressive, rootsy support band who had received a fair amount of airplay and support from Bloomington radio station, WTTS.

This was a concert weekend! KISS on Friday and X-Fest on Saturday meant 13 bands in under 48 hours and they were all very good. This was shaping up to be a very miserable weekend if not for these bands. My first wife was acting like an absolute bitch-hole at the time. Of course the fact that I wanted to see the KISS show just made her cringe anyway. So she went away for the weekend to visit her Mom and I went to two shows and had a great time. Fortunately, I saw KISS twice more before that relationship ended. Kiss reunion with original members, boots and make-up. The classic Love Gun era costumes were worn. SETLIST: Deuce / King Of The Night Time World / Do You Love Me / Calling Dr Love / Cold Gin / Christine Sixteen / Love Gun / Shout It Out Loud / Watchin' You / Firehouse / 2,000 Man / Strutter / Shock Me / Rock Bottom / God Of Thunder / New York Groove / Let Me Go, Rock And Roll / Rock And Roll All Nite / Beth / Detroit Rock City / Black Diamond

It is also the first time that Sammy gets to play a lot of material from his older solo days and from Montrose. One great Kiss Expo, featuring the premier of former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick's new project with one-time Motley Crue and Scream frontman, John Corabi. Cochran was also working with Kulick, Corabi and Eric Singer in the first version of ESP.

If you never saw Union live, you really missed an incredible rock band with a hard alternative edge. The band featured Kiss alumnus Bruce Kulick (g, v), former Motley Crue frontman John Corabi (v, g), with session veterans Brent Fitz on drums and Jamie Hunting on bass. Jamie played with a number of great rock bands, including session work with Kip Winger, Jon Butcher Axis, Vince Neil and David Lee Roth. Union released only two studio albums and one live album before calling it quits to pursue other projects. The live concerts featured original music, as well as Jungle from the Kiss album Carnival of Souls, Man In The Moon from John Corabi's previous band The Scream, along with cover songs from Surrender (Cheap Trick) and Brown Sugar (The Rolling Stones).

118.
This pre-Christmas concert date drew a small attendance, compared to the standing room only crowds that came out for the Reunion Tour. SETLIST: Psycho Circus / Shout It Out Loud / Let Me Go Rock 'N Roll / Shock Me / Do You Love Me / Calling Dr. Love / Firehouse / Cold Gin / Into The Void (w/ Ace Solo) / Love Gun (Paul flys out over the crowd to a tower) / Within / 100,000 Years / King Of The Night Time World / God Of Thunder / Deuce / Detroit Rock City / Beth / Black Diamond / Rock And Roll All Nite. It should be noted that the concert was presented in 3-D, which included jumbo video screens with special 3-D graphic animations.
Although unfamiliar with Econoline Crush before the show, I instantly came to like them. They seemed to be an interesting combination of Duran Duran meets the Psychedelic Furs.
119.
It is a rare opportunity to catch Jeff Beck in a market such as Indianapolis. I'm a long time fan of the legendary guitarist and the venue was superb. The setlist featured a lot of material from Beck's most recent album, Who Else. While he did not offer one of his most popular collaborations with Rod Stewart, People Get Ready, he did include a wide array of material from There And Back and Guitar Shop. Another treat was the Asian influenced solo from his work on the film soundtracks to Frankie's House. Amid some of the quieter parts of the piece, a few of the rowdier fans had to shout and whistle, to which Beck held his finger to his mouth as if to say, "Shhh".
Paul Thorn was unknown to me prior to the concert, but quickly won me over with his southern accent and comical lyrics. Thorn has since been a regular guest on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show.
120.
Another great Indianapolis Kiss Expo event, featuring the short lived band, ESP (or Eric Singer Project). Having found some spare time on his hands following the announcement of an eminent Kiss Reunion tour, Kiss drummer Eric Singer assembled some friends for a one off cover album, featuring John Corabi (Union, Motley Crue, The Scream), Bruce Kulick (Kiss, Union), and Karl Cochran (Ace Frehley Band). The foursome played a number of cover songs from the their only studio album together, Lost And Spaced

123. This was a real treat for me because I was really into B.B. King's music at the time and I didn't know who the support acts were going to be until the day of the show. As far as I was concerned, King was riding a real string of excellent modern blues albums starting with Blues Summit. Subsequent albums included Deuces Wild (another duets album), Let The Good Times Roll, Blues On The Bayou and Making Love Is Good For You. I couldn't have been more impressed with King or his band.
I was somewhat familiar with the legend of Bobby Blue Bland, a long time friend of B.B. King's. His famous snort noise between lyrics is unmistakable. His short set was a wonderful prelude to B.B. King.
The Manhattans are a fabulous group as well. I found that I was more familiar with their hits than I realized. Who can forget Shining Star?

Always entertaining and always charming, Larry Carlton played to a full house at the Indiana Roof Ballroom (by far one of the nicest venues in the entire city!). Carlton, former sculptor of the classic Steely Dan sound among many, many others, supported his newest solo release, Fingerprints. The guitarist's set was evenly balanced among older solo favorites, songs from the new album and of course some instrumental interpretations of his popular Steely Dan work. He's a guitarist's guitarist by definition. As a California studio musician, Carlton's resumˆ© contains work for nearly every major name in the business, including The Partridge Family, The Crusaders, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Jerry Garcia, Stanley Clarke, Lee Ritenour, Donald Fagan, and Fourplay to name a few.

Billed as the FAREWELL TOUR, however the only member that actually "retired" from KISS active duty after the tour was Ace Frehley. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley would carry on with Peter Criss and Tommy Thayer the following year with Aerosmith. As it turned out, KISS actually "opened" every show of that tour, going on stage before Aerosmith. Ace Frehley wisely avoinded becoming their support act, but that's another story. SETLIST: Detroit Rock City / Shout It Out Loud / Deuce / Heaven's On Fire / Calling Dr. Love / Shock Me / Psycho Circus / Firehouse / Do You Love Me? / Let Me Go, Rock 'N Roll / Into The Void / Cold Gin / God Of Thunder / Lick It Up / I Love It Loud / 100,000 Years / Love Gun / Black Diamond / I Stole Your Love / Beth / Rock And Roll All Night.
The only thing "conservative" about Ted Nugent are his political views. Make no mistake, this guy is still the Motor City Madman as evidenced by his full octane show. Over 50 years of age, Ted can still rock 'em and sock 'em. I'm still not sure why Skid Row had to be a part of the event. With or without singer Sebastian Bach, they still stink. I once heard they were added as a favor to Ace Frehley so he would have someone to hang out with on tour.

127. A fabulous summer evening, complete with a full moon which rose ever so slowly above the back fence of the outdoor amphitheater. Sting even paused the show long enough to comment on the moon and proceeded to play Moon Over Bourbon Street. Supporting one of his most successful album releases, Sting captured the sold out audience with a hits package sprinkled with just the right number of new songs. The evening was complete with a few offerings from his Police days.
Tracy Chapman was an equally impressive entertainer, offering favorites from her debut album through her then current release Telling Stories, along with her hit Give Me One Reason.

I drove into Chicago a little early the day of the concert. November can be pretty cold downtown. Anyway, I stopped by the theater to get my bearings and noticed the TTN camera trucks outside. Turns out the whole show, both of two sold out nights in fact, were being filmed for a live DVD. The DVD turned out to be Sammy Hagar & The Waboritas Birthday Bash. What a bash it was! The tequila was flowing at the concession stands, everybody was happy. You wanna see a great show? Check out the DVD, it's all there! I had an awesome seat for the show, the first royalty box on the left.
